 FAQs

  • Aged care:

Fall Prevention: Occupational Therapists assess the home environment to identify potential hazards and recommend modifications to reduce the risk of falls. They may also provide balance training and teach strategies to improve mobility and safety.

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): Occupational Therapists help older adults maintain or regain the ability to perform essential daily tasks such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and meal preparation. They may suggest adaptive equipment or teach alternative techniques to facilitate independence.

Cognitive Stimulation: For individuals experiencing cognitive decline or dementia, Occupational Therapists develop interventions to engage and stimulate cognitive function. This may include memory exercises, puzzles, and structured activities to promote mental acuity and maintain cognitive skills.

Social Engagement: Occupational Therapists facilitate social participation and community integration by organising group activities, outings, and social events tailored to the interests and abilities of older adults. They also provide support and resources to help individuals stay connected with family and friends.

Home Modifications: When aging is the at home is the goal, Occupational Therapists assess the home environment to identify barriers to independent living and recommend modifications such as grabrails, handrails, ramps etc to enhance safety and accessibility.

    Disability:

Mobility and Accessibility: Occupational Therapists work with individuals with disabilities to improve mobility, strength, and coordination through therapeutic exercises and activities. They may also prescribe mobility aids such as wheelchairs or walkers, to facilitate independent movement.

Assistive Technology: Occupational Therapists evaluate the use of assistive devices and technology to enhance functional abilities and promote independence. This may include devices such as communication aids, or adaptive utensils tailored to individual needs.

Home and Environmental Modifications: Similar to aged care, Occupational Therapists assess the home environment of individuals with disabilities to identify barriers and recommend modifications to promote safety, accessibility, and independence.

Capacity Building and Skill Development: Occupational therapy aims to build the capacity of individuals with disabilities to develop skills, overcome barriers, and achieve their goals independently. This may involve providing education, training, and ongoing support to develop self-management skills, problem-solving abilities, and adaptive strategies for navigating daily life.
